AWS SES – Message rejected, Email address is not verified

When using SES a verified email address might throw the following error when sending emails from the verified address:

554 Message rejected: Email address is not verified

Things to check on this are:

  1. Make sure SES is not being used in Sandbox mode (i.e. it is in production)
  2. Check that the email address being used matches the case of the verified email address
  3. Check the region that is being shown in the error against that of the verified address
    For example, if the verified address is in the EU-WEST zone and the SES host being accessed from code is US-EAST you will get this error. The host would need to be eu-west to use the verified email address correctly.
